With the announcement by Intel of its new family of processors, the Core i9 Series Extreme Edition, this market, rather than diversify, rose to level.

The Core i9 series is designed to meet the needs of users who must perform actions (play in 4K, live stream, edit-render videos, etc.) with a lot of energy demand. In addition, it is spearheaded by Intel’s first consumer chip that consists of more than one teraflop power: i9-7980XE, an 18-core CPU (teraflop is a unit that measures the mathematical calculations made per second by a CPU and A GPU).

According to experts, i9-7980XE apparently outperforms AMD’s 16-core Threadripper CPU, which was to be the company’s most powerful consumer processor for 2017. However, AMD has also sought to specialize in this field and that is why in February of this year ENTER.CO told them about its Ryzen line. According to Lisa Su, CEO and president of AMD, processors such as the Ryzen 7 1700X outperform the performance of its previous version and is aimed primarily at computer lovers.

New in Skylake-X

Intel Skylake-X is the arrival of the first desktop processor consisting of 18 cores, the Core i7-7980X consisting of 18 cores with Skylake architecture and HT technology to handle up to 36 threads of execution. Its ten cores operate at a maximum frequency of 4.5 Ghz and are accompanied by 18 MB of L2 cache and an L3 cache still unknown for unreachable performance. Thanks to its manufacturing process of 14 nm Tri-Gate its TDP is maintained in 140W demonstrating an enormous energy efficiency.

Price the main differentiator?

Those who by their profession or hobby pay special attention to the power of the processor should know that to more capacity, higher price. The Core i9 series will be priced at $ 1,999, with i9-7980XE on board. Hence Intel would have had to think about cheaper versions of 10, 12, 14 and 16 cores, with prices starting at $ 999. Finally, not all need 18 cores.

In the case of AMD, although in some performance tests Intel processors outperform those of AMD, the difference in price makes the work that AMD is doing with its new line of processors is breaking the mold. According to our previous note, Ryzen arrived in February of this year with three models: one entry for $ 329, with eight cores, ability to handle 16 instructions and a base clock speed of 3.0 GHz that could be Increase to 3.7 GHz. The following models cost $ 500 or more.

AMD then introduced the Threadripper, 16-core and 32-wire consumer processors, which for many experts at the time far outperformed Intel’s i7-6950X with 10 cores and 20 threads. And the cooling capacity? Both AMD and Intel offer liquid cooling technology.

More forecasts

That’s the way things are, and according to an article in The Verge in mid-2016, although today it’s not easy to sell high performance processors for desktop computers because people do not think they need more speed or quality in their chips, the manufacturers of this type of devices have decided to prove the opposite. That’s why Intel decided to come out with a more advanced edition (which in 2016 was its 10-core Broadwell-E CPU). And now that the level has reached such a high point with i9, we will have to see what AMD will show again.
