Celebrating 100 Years of Indian Cinema

In the past 100 years, there are many cultural differences in Indian cinema and the father of Indian Cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke, who released  a silent film “Raja Harishchandra” in the year 1913 . Raja Harischandra is still one of most remembered movie at many bollywood movies review sites. The success of the Dadasaheb Phalke made the film makers to think for a while, that the film industry is going to boom in the coming 100 years. First French  introduced the moving films, and later India brought many developments in the film Industry.

It has moved from the silent movie to the latest digital and 3D movies, at inception the films were released in black and white, now all the films can be watched in the internet  and people can download them even  from the internet. The greatest facility one can enjoy is, one can download not only the latest films, but also even the films which were produced some decades ago. After Dadaphalke succeeded in his first film ‘Raja Harishchandra’ many film makers  of Bombay and Madras, started and attached their career to the film industry and produced many silent films.  In the mid of 1920, Madras has become a center  for the film industry many film makers like SS Vasan, Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu and many others started establishing film houses and started to shoot South Indian films in Telugu and Tamil languages.

The basics

 The 1931 era got a drastic significance with the production of talkie movies. After this the silent movies slowed down and the first talkie movie  ‘ Alam Ara’was produced by Ardeshir Irani. So the father of the talkie movie was Ardeshir Irani.  Along with the commanding voice by the actors, the music also became an important in the Indian cinema. The basic fact behind the Bollywood industry is with the language. Initially the films were lengthy and they may be for three and half hours to four hours. In the middle of the film, there is a break for the audience, to refresh for some time. In the four hour movie nearly there may be 10 songs and many dance scenes. Those people used to give more importance for art and artists. So there will be compulsory some dance scenes in the film. However, the latest trend is the producers don’t give much importance for songs and dance, they were concentrating on graphics and fights.

The latest Bollywood films don’t give  importance for the music element. In the year 1961, the first movie released without any song was ‘Kanoon’ which was totally a court scene. When speaking about the traditional films the Indian censor board is playing a significant role and not allowing the producers to show the portrayals of sex and violence in Bollywood films. Even though the censor board is restricting many scenes the first film to show a gay affair was ‘Dunno Y Na Jaane Kyon, which was the latest movie released in 2010. This film was an adult movie. The Bollywood director, Baldev Raj Chopra was the first director to object the divorce , prostitution and rape scenes. He released a film in the year 1980 ‘Insaaf Ka Tarazu’ without any of the vulgar scenes.shanghai-0a

The Bollywood film industry is conservative because, there is a wide range of people who possess different views and ethics. So keeping this in mind the film makers scrutinize many issues, even some of the violence and social issues also. In this connection director Dibaka Banerjee scrutinized two murder scenes from his film ‘Shanghai’ in the year 2012.

The Classic Films

According to leading bollywood movies review site century is a period where there can be many changes, especially in the film industry where there are nearly 1200 films were produced eveyr year. Now the film makers are combining all the themes like comedy, romance, fights and masala and action to satisfy all types of audience. Parallel Cinema

The parallel cinemas were moved away in the mid of the century by the classic and traditional movies. ‘Bicycle Thieves’ won Prix International in the year 1954.

Modern Films
